Young Engineers Day: Thursday, April 13th

Dear Serendipity Families,

It’s back! This year’s Young Engineers Day Challenge is the Egg Drop.

Students will compete to engineer, build, and test contraptions capable of carrying precious cargo (whole, raw eggs) safely to the ground from the school roof. This year, however, the build will be done entirely at school.

While no work will be done outside of school, we still need your help with providing supplies; please bring small boxes, newspaper, paper bags, and other recyclable materials to your classroom teacher no later than Wednesday April 12, 2017.

April 13, 2017 is our event day. Our event this year is split into 2 parts, build time and drop time. The building time will start at 8:30 am and end promptly at 10:00 am After a short recess to allow our contraptions to be placed on the roof, we will begin the drop event at approximately 10:30 am.

Serendipity School will be providing all of the eggs for this event.
No outside eggs will be allowed.

This year there will be three competition categories. Students in any grade may select the category they would like to be entered in. The categories this year are: Visible Egg (your egg must be visible inside the contraption), Lean and Green (the winner will be the surviving egg that uses the least amount of materials), and Most Graceful Landing (the winner will be the egg that has the softest easiest time heading to the ground). While some contraptions may meet all 3 criteria, only one category may be chosen and must be selected before the drop.

Parent Helpers: If you are interested in being a parent volunteer for this event please see your classroom teacher. Parents in Kindergarten and 1st Grade will lead a group of students. Parents in 2nd and 3rd Grades will either lead a group or supervise a partnership. Parents in 4th and 5th Grades will supervise a partnership or an individual.

We wish all of our students the best of luck, and hope that only a few eggs will be scrambled, before they hit the frying pan.
