Curriculum Corner: How We Assess Learning at Serendipity

At Serendipity, assessment is not an endpoint. It is an ongoing, reflective process that helps us understand each child as a thinker, a learner, and a member of our community. Rather than relying on a single score or test, we use a variety of assessment tools to capture the full complexity of a child’s growth. Our approach is rooted in qualitative, anecdotal, formative, and summative assessments, supported by thoughtfully chosen quantitative data when helpful. This balanced system allows us to honor each child’s individuality while ensuring we meet essential learning goals.

Qualitative and anecdotal assessments are at the heart of our practice. Teachers observe how students approach challenges, collaborate with peers, express ideas, and engage with the world around them. These insights often come through classroom discussions, writing samples, creative work, 1:1 conversations, and daily interactions. They highlight not only what a child knows, but how they think, which provides rich, authentic information that a number alone can’t capture.

We pair this with ongoing formative assessments, which happen during learning and help teachers adjust instruction in real time. These include student reflections, journals, reading and math 1:1 conferences, and informal checks for understanding. They allow us to scaffold learning thoughtfully and responsively. At natural intervals, we use summative assessments such end-of-unit projects, performance tasks, and portfolios — to understand what a child can do independently and to celebrate completed work.

While we do use quantitative measures such as reading benchmarks and math fluency checks, we view them as just one piece of the story — a helpful snapshot, not a full portrait. These data points help us monitor growth, but they are always interpreted alongside the deeper, more meaningful qualitative evidence gathered throughout the year.

This philosophy comes together in our Narrative Report Cards, which serve as both documentation and conversation starters. Each narrative shares a detailed view of your child’s learning, strengths, emerging skills, and next steps. They are designed with growth in mind, promoting goal setting, partnership with families, and a shared understanding of how each child learns best. We see these narratives not as final judgments, but as invitations to reflect, connect, and support your child’s continued journey as a curious, confident, and capable learner.

Ultimately, our assessment approach reflects what we believe about children: that learning is dynamic, interconnected, and deeply personal. By looking closely, listening carefully, and celebrating growth in all its forms, we ensure that every child is truly seen. We are committed to partnering with families to honor each learner’s path  and to helping every student thrive academically, socially, and creatively at Serendipity.
