Curriculum Corner: Identity at the Heart of Learning

Identity: Where It All Begins…

It is often said that change brings opportunity. As we welcomed our new Head of School, Mandy Rizvi, into her role, we have also had the opportunity to reflect upon—and recommit to—the values upon which Serendipity School was founded. Mandy frequently names and returns us to these core values: Individuality, Discovery, and Community.

These three words capture the heart of our mission. They remind us that each child who walks through our doors carries with them a burgeoning sense of self, a deep capacity for learning, and a natural desire to belong.

As Serendipity’s Director of Pedagogy, my role is to broaden and deepen our incredible educators’ understanding of how we bring those values to life in our classrooms. Our aim is always the same: to set our students up to be leaders and change makers with a strong sense of identity, the skills to drive sustained inquiry and innovation, and the empathy to build inclusive communities.

Why Begin With Identity?

At Serendipity, we believe that identity is the root from which all other learning grows. When students know who they are, feel seen and valued, and are encouraged to bring their whole selves to school, they are able to take intellectual risks, to discover new passions, and to collaborate with others in authentic and meaningful ways.

This is why we start each year with four weeks of explorations about who we are and who we want to be, as individuals, and as a class community.

The Classroom in Action

In our classrooms, the teachers thoughtfully structure conversations about belonging, and opportunities for children to tell their own stories. Whether through art, writing, dramatic play, or scientific observation, our students learn that their voices and choices  matter—and that their classmates’ voices matter too.

In the youngest grades, identity work may look like a child proudly sharing a family photo or sharing a beloved object.  In the upper grades, it might take the form of exploring personal values, debating ethical questions, or connecting family history to broader cultural narratives. Across the grades, teachers use these openings to guide students toward discovery—of themselves, of others, and of the world around them.

Our classrooms become inclusive places where individuality is honored, identity is celebrated, and acceptance is the norm.

Looking Forward

As we move through this year together, we will continue to hold identity at the center of our work. When we honor individuality, we empower discovery. When we nurture discovery, we strengthen community. And when our community is strong, our students are ready to step into the wider world not only as learners, but as leaders.

At Serendipity, identity isn’t just a starting point—it’s where it all begins, and where everything meaningful in education ultimately returns.
