Traditions and Honoring the Winter Season
Traditions and Honoring the Winter Season
Tradition!
As we enter the winter months, our classrooms naturally fill with curiosity, stories, and the sense of anticipation that this time of year brings. At Serendipity, we believe that honoring the identities, cultures, and lived experiences of all children is an essential part of building belonging. Winter provides a beautiful opportunity to do just that. Families in our community observe a wide range of winter traditions and some observe none at all. Our goal is to ensure that every child feels seen, valued, and included, no matter what winter looks like in their home.

At school, we build shared rituals that anchor our community across the year. Fall Fair invites playful connection and service; Moving Up Day marks growth and transition with pride; and Pizza Friday promotes mixed age group socialization. This week, the entire school is excitedly rehearsing for our annual Winter Concert, lifting student voices in celebration of light and togetherness. These events help shape the rhythm of the school year, Serendipity’s predictable moments of connection, saying “This is who we are, and this is how we show up for one another.” They model the power of simple, repeatable traditions to create stability and belonging.
Just as our school rituals ground us, the traditions you create at home, big or small, religious or secular, play a vital role in children’s lives. A tradition can be lighting a candle, cooking a favorite meal, taking a hike, family movie night, or simply spending intentional time together at the holidays. These simple rituals anchor children and nurture identity.

When children share these moments in the classroom, they deepen pride in their own story and learn to appreciate the beautiful variety of ways families cultivate happiness, comfort, and connection. As they learn about each other, children build cultural awareness and a sense of belonging, both of which deeply support academic engagement and emotional well-being. When students see their identities reflected and learn about the traditions of their classmates, it strengthens the community we are nurturing together.
In whatever ways your family welcomes this season, through celebration, rest, reflection, or simply togetherness, we at Serendipity are sending all the best wishes for a Winter Break filled with laughter, love and light.
